This was our first time participating in the parade and we won 2nd prize in the float category!
Shelter residents (past and present) marched with shelter staff and volunteers along the parade route. Both people and pets carried out the medical theme by dressing up as doctors and as patients.
2011 Coopersburg
Halloween Parade
Theme: Wrangling in Forever Homes
With a wild west theme, Animals In Distress was once again spotted in the Coopersburg Halloween parade. The dogs (especially the puppies) were a big hit with crowd, visiting with young and old along the parade route.
Featured Animals
Spook - Shelter Mascot
Spook came to Animals In Distress in 2007, a little kitten unable to walk. He's still with us and basically runs the place (just ask him)!
Spook is a symbol of hope. His disabilities don't stop him. He contributes to the shelter newsletter. He supervises the cat wing, helps raise puppies, and has even educated us on how to herd guinea pigs.
But seriously, without no-kill shelters like Animals In Distress, cats and dogs like Spook wouldn't stand a chance.
Panda
Panda is a rescued Miniature Bull Terrier. She is also blind. It is suspected that her owners abandoned her in a remote location because they no longer wanted her due to her loss of sight.
She is a spectacular little dog and has now been placed in a forever home with a loving family and will never be hurt or afraid again.
Around the Shelter
Monday Night Dog Walking
It's a typical Monday night and the dog walkers are out in full force.
Dedicated volunteers come out rain or shine and guide our shelter dogs through the winding walking paths. Some of the dogs even take a dip in the stream on a hot summer evening. It provides exercise and fresh air for the dogs - and the volunteers too!
Check our calendar and plan to join us for the next volunteer orientation if you are interested in taking part in this fun activity.
Canine Good Citizen Class
Volunteers and trainers donate their time to accompany shelter dogs as they attend Canine Good Citizen Class, one of the ways we prepare our dogs for their forever homes. Some adopted dogs return with their new owners to take the class.
If you are interested in bringing your dog to class, contact us to find out when the next class is scheduled.
Fabulous Felines
Over 325 cats call Animals In Distress their home. Young and old, large and small, they know they will have a safe warm place to sleep and food to eat.
The cats live in community rooms based on personality or health needs. On Monday nights when volunteers are outside walking dogs, loyal cat volunteers are busy inside, socializing the cats in preparation for adoption.
Feeding Time in the Cat Wing
Feeding time is serious business in the cat wing.
Our shelter staff is greeted first thing in the morning by rows of furry faces waiting for breakfast. Or an all-day nap quickly comes to an end when dinner is served. What a happy sound it is to hear a room full of purring, slurping kitties devouring their dinner!
